The man in front of me at the post office had a parcel that would not scan and a speech prepared for the cashier. I waited. I even nodded at the right moments. An hour later I told someone to put his hands on the pillow and leave them there until I said otherwise. My voice stayed level. His did not, not quite, when I moved his wrists myself.
How to be dominant in bed, for me, is not a new personality. It is deciding the next minute and sounding like I mean it. I am still the person who apologises when someone else steps on my bag. I am also, when he has asked, the person who says stay.
How to be dominant in bed without becoming a cartoon
Dominant is not cruel unless you both want that, and want it in so many words. I used to think I had to borrow a voice from a clip: colder, meaner, a bit bored with him on purpose. I tried it once with the hall light leaking under the door. He went quiet in the wrong way, the way people go when they are deciding whether they are still safe. I stopped. I said that was a costume and we had not ordered it. We had tea. We did not try the costume again.
What he had actually asked for, days earlier, clothes on, was to be told. Not insulted. Not ignored. Told. Talking about sex before you change the temperature is how you find out which of those he means. I have mixed them up because the internet sells them in the same bundle. They are not the same bundle.
If someone wants degradation, that is a negotiated flavour: words they have chosen, a scene with an edge you have both named, and a way back to being kind. I am not going to practise it on you from this page. I do not call readers names. I do not call partners names they have not asked for. Mean is a menu item. It is not the definition of being in charge.
What I do instead is smaller and, for the men I have been with, usually hotter. I pick the next thing. I say it once. I do not giggle it into a suggestion. If I want his hands on the pillow, I say hands on the pillow. The heat is the decision, not a performance of being a different woman.
I laugh. I have laughed in the first thirty seconds of trying to sound stern and then put the voice back, quieter. Laughing is not a verdict unless you treat it as one. Cartoon dominance is what happens when you think you have to keep a face on.
If you are shy, you do not need a dungeon voice. You need one sentence you can say without climbing. Practise it under your breath on the walk home if you have to. “Stay there.” “Look at me.” “Hands down.” Shy and dominant can live in the same body. Tired me asks. Dominant me still asks, once, about the edges, and then I stop asking about every inch.
Telling him the fantasy is the daylight half. The night half is doing one piece of it, not the cinema version. If the picture in your head involves leather you do not own, start with the sentence. Light bondage can wait until you can already say stay and mean it.
Give orders you can keep
An order is a promise that you will notice whether it is being followed. If you cannot notice, do not give it.
“Don’t come until I say” sounds powerful until you get interested in his mouth and lose the plot. I have done that. Start with orders that live in the next minute. Hands here. Slow down. Wait. Those I can enforce with a look or a hand.
Keep the list short. One instruction at a time. I used to stack three because I thought volume would make me convincing. Volume made him guess.
Use a voice that does not climb. Mine goes up when I am asking a favour and down, slightly, when I mean it. I do not shout. Close, low, once. If he does not do it, I repeat once, or I stop and check whether we are still playing.
Give him something to succeed at. “Hands on the pillow” is achievable. “Be hotter” is not. I have dated the apology. It is hard to feel in charge of a man who is already prosecuting himself.
If you want a bit of role, pick a sentence, not a wig. A full character with a backstory is how I go shy in my own bedroom and put a film on.
The bit I got wrong for a stretch of my thirties was giving orders I had copied and could not stand behind. I told a man to beg. He did. I felt nothing except the sudden need to laugh. We had not wanted begging. I had wanted to sound like I knew what I was doing.
Use their yes
Someone has to have asked for this, or agreed to it, when they still had their jeans on. I do not spring a new personality on a person who thought we were having ordinary sex. Surprise-as-dominance is just surprise. I have been on the receiving end of a sudden grab that thought it was confidence. It was not. It was a man who had not checked.
Their yes can be specific. “Tell me what to do.” “Hold me still.” “I want to not decide tonight.” Those are different nights. I ask which one they mean. If they shrug and say “you know, dominant,” I do not guess. I offer two pictures and let them pick. A shrug is not a brief.
Use the yes in the room, too. People go quiet when they like it and they go quiet when they have left. A body that leans in: that is a yes still happening. A body that goes polite and far away: that is not submission. That is someone managing me. I stop. “Still good?” is allowed to be boring. A safeword is better than hoping I can read minds.
If they say amber, I change something. If they say red, the scene is over. I do not bargain it back. Bargaining a red is how you teach someone not to use one.
Consent here is the same as locking the door. You name it, you mean it, you do not make a speech about how mature you are for naming it.
Freezing is not a gift. I have frozen and been praised for being “so good and quiet.” I was not being good. I was waiting for it to be over. If I am the one in charge and he goes still in that way, I take the charge off. I would rather end a scene early than collect a silence I did not earn.
Praise as control
I did not expect this to work as well as it does. A lot of the men who want to be told also want to be told they are doing it right. Not a paragraph. Not a teacher voice on a first night (I have heard that one, and it made the room go school). A short, true thing.
“Good.” “Stay exactly there.” “That. Don’t add anything.” “Look at what you’re doing to me.”
Praise, used like this, is not a sticker. It is a leash made of attention. He stays in the shape I like because the shape is being seen. If I go quiet and disappointed on purpose, that is a different kink, and we would have had to ask for it. I do not withhold warmth as a trick unless warmth was the thing we agreed to play with. Even then I am careful. I like heat. I do not like surprising someone with contempt.
If praise makes you cringe, skip the word good and narrate. “I like you like this.” “Keep your hands where I put them.” Same job.
I used to think being dominant meant I was not allowed to sound pleased. Pleased is useful. It tells him the target. A man guessing in the dark will speed up, or get rougher, or start a new project with his mouth. Loyalty to the thing I just asked for is the point.
If you want filth in the praise, keep it true. I have said he looked wrecked in a way I meant. I have also tried a line I would not repeat in daylight and watched both of us flinch.
After, be a person again
This is the part I used to skip because I thought staying in character would make the night more impressive. It made the night lonelier. He needed to know I was still fond of him. I needed to know I was still allowed to want a glass of water and a normal sentence.
Aftercare is not only for people who own kit. If you have been in charge, you come down too. I used to disappear to the bathroom and scroll, because being ordinary felt like a drop in status. Status is not the point. The point was an hour. Then you are two people in a flat.
I ask if he wants water. I say one true kind thing that is not dirty. If something was too much, I say it while we are still in the room, not three days later as a joke. If I drop, I say I am dropping.
Be a person in the morning as well. A text that is not a recap of positions. If you were sharp in the scene and soft in the relationship, the morning is how you prove it. If you cannot be soft in the morning, do not be sharp at night.
I do not stay in character while I brush my teeth. I do not call him the thing I called him in the dark when we are buying milk. People who cannot switch off are not more dominant. They are stuck.
FAQ
How do I be dominant if I am shy?
One sentence, said once, in a voice that does not climb. You do not need a speech or a new wardrobe. Pick an order you can keep for a minute: hands here, stay still, look at me. Practise it when you are dressed if the word dies in your mouth at night. Shy is not a disqualification. It is a reason to start smaller than the picture in your head. I am shy in shops. I am less shy, on request, about where someone’s hands go. Both can be true.
Do I need to be mean?
No. Mean is optional, and only if both of you asked for that flavour with actual words. Dominance is decisions and attention. Cruelty is a scene some people like and many people do not. If you have not named the words, do not use them. I will not write you a script of insults. If that is your shared taste, you choose the words together, you keep a stop, and you come back to kindness after. If you only think you should be mean because a clip was, retire the clip.
What if I laugh?
Then you laugh, and you decide whether to put the voice back. I have snorted mid-order and then said, quieter, the same order again. The night survived. What kills it is treating the laugh as proof you are not allowed. If you are still only laughing after a minute, drop the bit and have ordinary sex. That is sense, not a failed audition. BDSM that starts small has room for this. So does a night with no name on it.
Can women be dominant with men easily?
If he wants it, yes. I have mostly dated men. The ones who asked to be told did not need me to become a cartoon, and they did not need a lecture about feminism first. They needed a yes, a stop, and a woman who would actually decide the next minute. The ones who did not want it were not a project. I do not enjoy converting people. If he is curious and nervous, start with one instruction he already likes. If he is disgusted, believe him and do something else with your evening.
I ask if he wants the lamp off. Then we are just two people who had a good night, and I do not owe the room a sequel in character.

Porn taught me to sound bored on purpose and it was awful. Level voice and moving his wrists myself went better.

Deciding the next minute without becoming a cartoon. Risk assessment joke aside, that landed.
