My first one was more logistics than porn. A glass of water on the book pile. A condom conversation that went on long enough to be dull. A slightly awkward minute about who faced whom, and whether anyone wanted to be in the middle. That is why people still spoke to each other in the morning.
How to have a threesome, if you want a morning that is still civil, is closer to hosting than it is to performing. I wanted heat. I also wanted nobody to go home feeling like furniture. Those two wants can share a night if you do the boring work first.
How to have a threesome when the night is still a night
Talk until you are almost bored. Then talk a bit more. I do not mean a seminar. I mean the questions that sound unsexy in a kitchen and become kind under a duvet.
What do you want to happen. What do you not want to happen. Who is going to kiss whom. Are we using condoms for everything that needs one. If someone wants to stop, what word do we use, and do we all agree that stop means stop, not "convince me." If someone feels left out, do they say so in the room or do they tap a shoulder and go to the loo.
I have tried the version where we "just see what happens." What happened was two people who already knew each other's bodies, and one person guessing. Guessing is a lonely job. The night that worked had a loose plan and a lot of pausing. The night that worked was also not a film. I am saving the film expectation for another piece. This one is the plumbing.
Talking about sex with a partner is the skill underneath this. You need it twice: once as a pair, before you look for anyone, and once as three, before anyone is undressed. The pair conversation is about whether you actually want this. The three conversation is about how.
If you have not yet found a partner who feels like a person, do not book a night to prove you are brave. Bravery is a poor reason to get naked with two people you cannot talk to.
Talk until you are almost bored
Clothes on. Not mid-kiss, not after a bottle, not as a checklist you rattle through while someone is already taking off a sock.
I like a walk or a table. I like questions with actual answers. "Are you all right with kissing" is a start. "Are you all right with him kissing me where you can see it" is a better one. Specificity is not a mood-killer. Specificity is how you avoid a flinch you then have to pretend was pleasure.
Ask about coming. Ask about names. Ask whether anyone wants to be watched more than touched, or touched more than watched. Ask who is leaving afterwards, and whether that is a kindness or a rejection. I once assumed staying was the compliment. For one of us it was a complication. We had not asked.
If you are the couple, do not present a finished constitution. Bring your rules as a draft the third person can edit. I have been handed a list as if I were signing for a parcel. I have also, as part of a pair, talked as if the third person's job was to fit. Fitting is for sofas.
Alcohol will be in some of these nights. If anyone is actually drunk, you postpone. A blurry yes is not a spicy yes. It is a morning of not being sure. I have been the person who wanted wine to take the edge off. The edge is information. I drink less now, on purpose, when the night has extra people in it.
Safer sex belongs in this conversation, not in a whisper against someone's neck. Say it while you can still put a jumper back on.
Safer sex for three
Three people means more combinations, which means more sentences. Who has been tested, and when. What you use with whom. Whether anyone is sleeping with people who are not in this room. Whether a condom goes on for oral as well as for everything else. Whether you have lube that is actually in the room, not in a drawer you will not want to open later.
I am not a doctor. I am a person who has sat in a clinic because a night felt too special to interrupt. Special is not a method.
Have more condoms than you think you need. Have a towel. Have water. Have a way to wash hands without making a procession of it. If something breaks, you say so. You do not do a silent calculation about likelihood. I have done the silent calculation. It is a rotten souvenir.
If one of you has a barrier you always use and another of you "does not like" that barrier, the barrier wins or the act does not happen. Sulking about a condom is information. It is not a sexy preference I am obliged to work around.
Dental dams, gloves, a spare toothbrush if someone is staying: unromantic, useful. I used to think mentioning a toothbrush made me a landlady. Mentioning it made me a host. Hosting is the job.
If anyone has a cold sore, a UTI, a "I think I might be coming down with something," you say it. The night can move. The night can also be tea and a film. I would rather a film than a week of pretending I had been careful.
A loose plan, not a script
We knew, that first night, that I wanted to be kissed by both of them and that I did not want to be the only one doing all the work in the middle. We knew he wanted to watch for a bit and then join in. We knew the other man did not want to be surprised from behind. That was the plan. It left a lot of room.
A script is: first she does this, then he does that, then we rotate like a group project. I have been in a room that tried the rotation. It felt like a queue. Someone always looked like they were waiting their turn, which is a grim expression to have above a pillow.
A loose plan is: we start here, we check faces, we change if someone goes polite. Polite is the danger face. I go polite when I am not enjoying myself and do not want to be a fuss. If you see me being very nice and very still, something has gone wrong.
You can laugh. You should laugh. A knee in the back, a cramp, a headboard that knocks, a condom wrapper that will not open: these are the night, not interruptions to the night. I have ruined a minute by trying to look like a person who does this all the time. I do not do this all the time. I do it rarely, and I would like to keep being able to look at the people afterwards.
Take turns noticing who has gone quiet. Not as a manager. As a person in a room. A hand on an ankle. A "do you want to come up here." A glass of water offered without a speech. I put a hand on his ankle the first time I saw his face close, when the other man kissed my neck. He nodded. We slowed. The night continued. It would not have continued if I had decided jealousy was a problem for later.
Jealousy in the room is not a failure of ethical non-monogamy. It is a body doing maths it has not practised. You do not have to be above it. You have to say it before it turns into a performance of being fine.
Jealousy in the room
It arrived for me as a tightness under the ribs when two people I liked were looking only at each other. It arrived for him as silence. It arrived for the other man as a joke that was trying too hard. None of that meant we had to stop. It meant someone needed a sentence.
"Can I have you back for a minute" is a sentence. "I need to watch and not be touched for a bit" is a sentence. "I am in my head, I am not angry" is a sentence. I have used all three. I have also used a smile that meant none of them, which helped nobody.
If you cannot say it in the room, you have come too far too fast. That is useful data for the next time, or for the decision that there will not be a next time. I have had nights I should have paused and did not, because pausing felt like I had failed the brief. The brief was never "look experienced." The brief was "do not hurt anyone for the sake of a story."
Do not use the third person as a lesson for your partner. I have seen that done. I have felt it done, when I was the extra. It is ugly. If your relationship needs a demonstration, it needs a conversation, not an audience.
If someone wants to stop, you stop. You do not finish the move you had in mind. You do not bargain. You get water. You sit up. You let the heat leave the room without punishing it. I have been the one who said stop. The room that stayed kind was the room that treated stop as information, not as a review of the evening.
Sleep, leave, debrief
Decide this before anyone is sleepy and kind. Sleepy and kind is how you get an overnight that one of you will regret, or a departure that feels like a dumping.
Options I have actually used: everyone stays, in a pile that is less glamorous than it sounds. Two stay, one takes a taxi while they can still find their shoes. Everyone gets dressed and has a glass of water in the kitchen like people who have just done something unusual and are still fond of each other.
The first morning I still think about, someone put the kettle on and nobody made a joke that turned the night into a story for later. We talked about whether we wanted to do it again. Two of us did. One of us wanted to sit with it. Sitting with it is allowed. Pressing for a sequel is how you turn a good night into a campaign.
Debrief when you are clothed and fed. Not in the doorway with a taxi waiting. Not by text while one of you is still in the shower. A short version that night if someone needs it: are you all right, do you need anything, thank you. A longer version the next day, as a pair if you arrived as a pair, and with the third person if they want that.
Say the true small thing. "I went quiet when you two kissed and I wish I had said so." "I liked your hand on my back more than I expected." "I do not want to do that particular thing again." I have offered a review instead of a feeling, because a review felt safer. Reviews make people defend themselves. Feelings make people stay in the room.
If you are going to see them again as friends, or as a repeat, send a message that is not a performance. "That was good. I am glad we did the boring talking. How is your Sunday." I have sent the message that tried to be cool. Cool reads as disappearance. Disappearance is how people decide you used them.
What I got wrong, the second time, was assuming the first night's manners would travel without being said again. They did not. A new person is a new night. You do the water and the condoms and the facing again. You do not get to be experienced as a personality. You get to be experienced as someone who still asks.
FAQ
How do you actually have a threesome?
You talk, you agree the barriers, you start slower than the idea in your head, and you keep looking at faces. People kiss, people touch, people take turns being in the middle and being at the edge. Someone might watch. Someone might want more kissing than anything else. There is no correct choreography. There is only whether everyone in the room is still choosing it. I have had more luck with pauses than with ambition.
What should we talk about first?
What you want, what you do not want, safer sex, who leaves, and what stop means. Then a smaller thing: kissing, names, whether photos are a no (mine are a no unless everyone is awake and explicit). If you cannot get through that list without a row, you are not ready for a third person. The list is doing you a favour.
Where does everyone sleep?
Wherever you decided before you were tender and tired. A pile, a taxi, a spare duvet on the floor. I have done all three. The pile is warmer. The taxi is cleaner if someone needs their own bed to feel like themselves again. The spare duvet is a compromise that can feel like exile if you do not name it kindly. Ask. Do not assign the floor to the third person as a default. That default tells a story you may not mean.
What if someone feels left out?
They say so, or you notice and ask. Then you change the shape of the room: a hand, a kiss, a pause, a reshuffle. Feeling left out is ordinary. Pretending you do not is how it becomes a sulk that lasts until Thursday. If the feeling will not move, you stop. A stopped night you can talk about is better than a finished night someone replays alone.
I still text the next day, even when the night was only a night. Especially then. A Sunday message is a cheap way to stay someone they can stand.

The glass of water on the book pile detail made me trust the rest of this.

We talked until we were almost bored and it made the night kinder. Still speak. Still text.

Hosting not performing is the bit I keep repeating to myself.

Any tips when one of you is more nervous about the morning after than the night?
