The bath had gone lukewarm and I still had not learnt anything useful from the taps. I sat on the closed toilet lid after, skin damp, phone torch in one hand and an eyeliner compact in the other. I had been shown badly. I had also been shown not at all. The short tour I give now is the one I needed that night.

If you came here for how to find the clitoris, here is the calm version. At the front of the vulva, where the inner lips meet under a little hood of skin, there is a small, roundish bit of tissue. That is the glans, the part you can usually see and feel. It is not inside the vagina. It is not a rumour. It is just higher and smaller than a lot of people were aiming.

How to find the clitoris: a plain description, no mystery

Start from the outside, with light and no agenda, or with a partner who has asked if they can look. You do not need a speech. You need a place.

If this is your own body: sit, or lie back with a pillow, and use a hand mirror. Fingers first, torch if the room is dim. From the pubic bone, move down a short way until the inner lips come together. Under that join there is a hood. Under or just below the hood, a firmer pea-sized swell. That is it. It may hide. It may be obvious. Both are ordinary.

If this is someone else's body: you ask. "Can I?" is enough. Then you use the same landmarks, slower, and you do not narrate the discovery as if you have won something. I have been on the receiving end of a proud announcement. It made me polite, which is the opposite of turned on.

What it feels like, to the person being touched: a concentrated, slightly electric sensitivity, different from the softer skin around it. Too dry and it can sting. Too sudden and it can make you flinch and then spend a minute pretending you did not. With enough warmth and wetness it can feel like the whole point of the evening.

What it looks like: not a leaflet cross-section. Sometimes a small nub. Sometimes mostly hood. Colour varies. Size varies. I wasted that first look waiting for mine to match a drawing I half-remembered. It did not. It was still the right anatomy.

The clitoris you cannot see is larger. Legs of tissue run back under the skin, which is why pressure around the area, or a grind, can feel good even when nobody is exactly on the visible bit. I mention that so you stop thinking you have failed if it is shy tonight. I am not going to turn this into a biology class. The useful fact is: the small bit is the starting point, not the whole organ.

People who arrive here after reading about the G-spot sometimes look inside first. That is a different conversation. This one is the porch, not the hallway.

Hood, glans, and why you start soft

The hood is not an obstacle. It is skin that keeps a very sensitive surface from being rubbed raw by knickers and the rest of the week. I used to pull it back as if I were unveiling something. That can feel fine. It can also feel like too much, too soon, on a night when I am not there yet.

Start on or over the hood. Soft. Wet. A fingertip, or the pad, not a nail. Small movements. If she (or you) wants the hood moved, the body usually helps: a tilt, a hand over yours, a "can you." I do not assume. I used to assume. Assuming is how I got a wince I then had to apologise for.

The glans can take more pressure later, once there is blood in the picture and nobody is treating this like a first hello. Early on, think of stroking a bruise you are fond of, not ringing a doorbell.

If you are touching yourself and you have never really looked, go gently for a few evenings before you decide what you like. I learnt more from unhurried nights than from one determined inspection. Looking helped. The fuss I made of "finding it properly" did not.

Lube helps when fingers are dry. Saliva helps in a pinch. A body that is already turned on helps most. If nothing is happening yet, kiss, wait, put a hand on a hip, and come back. The clitoris is not something you switch on from cold.

What to do with your fingers

Wet the fingers. Place them where the hood is, or just beside it, and make a small shape: a circle, a short up-and-down, a side-to-side that stays in one neighbourhood. Stay. I have ruined more of my own builds by wandering off to prove I had options than by being "boring."

Pressure: firmer than a tickle, smaller than a palm. If she goes still and polite, you are probably heavy. If she giggles and pulls away, you are probably light and scratchy. Adjust once. Then keep the new version.

Her hand over yours will teach you more than this paragraph. I still do that in the dark. It is not a failure of technique. It is the technique.

You can also use two fingers either side, so you are moving the hood over the glans rather than poking the glans itself. That is my favourite on nights when direct contact is too sharp. Some people want the opposite: hood back, very specific, almost no travel. You will not know until someone tells you, or until a hip answers.

If you want an orgasm in the plot, this is usually the plot. Not a garnish after penetration. A hand can stay while someone is inside. I wasted a long stretch of my twenties thinking I had to wait my turn. I did not. Wanting to come is allowed to take up space in the same minute as everything else.

Nails: short, or curled away. I have been scratched by a well-meaning man with a beautiful ring. The ring went on the side table. The night recovered. Ask before you add a second project (a finger inside, a toy, a new rhythm). One change at a time.

The bit I got wrong for years was going straight in, hard, because I thought confidence would cover the gap where information should have been. Confidence without a map is just speed. Speed on a clitoris is how you get a woman who is very nice about it and then does the job herself later.

What to do with your mouth

Same map, softer tool. Lips first, or a flat tongue over the hood, not a pointed attack on a spot you have decided is correct. Cover your teeth. Breathe. If you cannot breathe, come up, laugh, go back. I have written more about oral that stays elsewhere. Here I only need you to land in the right town.

Hold her open with a hand if the skin is in your way. Ask before a finger joins in. Stay when she gets close. Do not celebrate with a new letter of the alphabet. People do this. It feels like homework.

If she says "there," that word is worth more than this whole section. There means there. Not there-and-a-bit-to-the-left because you have an idea.

A mouth is not required. Some of us want fingers and a quiet room. Some of us want a thigh we can grind on and no commentary. Finding the clitoris is not a promise that you will now perform a particular act. It is knowing where to put the attention she actually asked for.

Common ways people miss it

They look inside. The vagina is nearby and very famous. The clitoris is higher, external, often under a fold. If you are searching as if for a pocket, you are in the wrong furniture.

They go too low, onto the opening, and stay there because something is happening. Something is happening. It may not be the something she comes from.

They go too far left or right and keep a polite rhythm on a bit of lip. Lips can feel lovely. They are not always the engine.

They start dry. Dry plus determination is a recipe for a sting and a woman who will not tell you, because she does not want to be a fuss. I have been that woman. I am trying to retire her.

They mash, then mash faster, then ask if it was good. Faster is not a compliment when you were already too much.

They treat looking as a joke, or they get clumsy with their hands because they are shy about the word. Shyness is human. Clumsy and unkind is a choice.

They find it, mention it, and then wander off to prove they can also do something more impressive. Stay. Impressive is optional. Location plus loyalty is the actual skill.

If she has a different map (higher, lower, more to one side, only through fabric, only with a toy), hers wins. I am one body. I am not a template.

FAQ

Where is the clitoris exactly?

At the front of the vulva, where the inner lips meet, under a hood of skin, a short way below the pubic bone and above the vaginal opening. You are not hunting inside. You are looking at the outside, at the top of the inner folds. A mirror and a bit of patience will show you more than a paragraph.

Is the clitoris only the small bit you can see?

No. The visible bit is the glans. The rest runs under the skin in a pair of legs, which is why a grind or pressure around the area can feel like a lot. You still start with the part you can find. You do not need a full internal diagram to touch someone kindly.

Should I pull back the hood?

Not as a first move, and not as a habit you do not check. Over the hood is safer until she is warm and asks for more direct contact, or until her own hand shows you. Some people want it pulled back every time. Some people flinch. I am both, on different nights. Ask, or follow the hand she puts over yours.

Can you be too rough?

Yes. I have been too rough on myself, and I have let other people be too rough because I did not want to sound fussy. If it stings, stop and add wetness, or move to the side, or come back later. If pain is new, sharp, or it lingers, that is a GP conversation, not a blog. Most "too rough" is just too soon and too dry. Softer, wetter, smaller. Then stay.

I still ask. I still get told I am a centimetre off. I adjust, and I do not make a speech about it. That is the map I trust more than my own.
